Florida based Sextet, UNDEROATH are poised to release album number three, host MTV2’S Headbangers Ball, headline a Spring US trek and then join the Vans Warped Tour as a main stage act. Broad and genre defying, the band reaches beyond all they have done previously and are excited to have a strong new album that can be interpreted in so many different ways. Vocalist Spencer Chamberlain called in to AAM from Des Moines, Iowa to share a few words about the latest disc “Define the Great Line.”
AAM: “They’re Only Chasing Safety” was your last album and as a whole you guys seemed to evolve even more musically by the time of that recording in comparison to the previous CD. Now, it’s been a couple of years since that dropped, what can we expect for your new release, “Define the Great Line?”
Spencer: I’d have to say way more maturity, as cheesy as that sounds. We are older and have been playing together longer. So we were pretty much ready to raise the bar. Musically and lyrically we wanted to challenge ourselves. I’d say it’s heavier and darker. Definitely the first album we are very, very proud of, we all agree nothing would be changed.
AAM: Are there any stand out songs on the new album that you really want to tell us about?
Spencer: I’d have to say no, at least not like the last record had. It’s a one directional album. Not concept based, the mood it’s laid out in is how we want it to be heard.
AAM: Who did you work with on this album and do you feel you have molded your sound to reflect the ever changing musical trends or did you just continue to write and create the music that moves you without a need to feel accessible?
Spencer: We just were us. We definitely don’t care about molding to be accessible. Adam from Killswitch and Matt Goldman helped with drums, and keyboard programming. We did what we wanted to do, It’s a way different sounding record than the last one. My vocal teacher said to me “Now this sounds like YOU, this defines what you guys are like, it’s your identity.” There were NO limitations on this record, everyone got to be themselves. It was old friends hanging out making an album, having fun, just a good experience all the way around.
AAM: Many bands try their best to stay away from being pigeonholed. If you HAD to label yourself, what genre of music do you feel suits you best? How do you feel about being categorized by the media and fans?
Spencer: I don’t know, I don’t really pay attention to it, were just a heavy band. I like heavy music, we all do, so we don’t care how people try to categorize us.
AAM: So, I know you guys have been on the Warped tour before, I bet your excited to be going out again this year! Have you played with any other acts you have really bonded with over the course of the tour or are there any bands you are looking forward to playing with this time around?
Spencer: Yeah we have made tons of friends on the tour. Even if it’s not bands we like musically, I’d say 99.9 percent of the time they are still awesome people. It’s just overall a really great time. I know we are all excited about seeing “Everytime I Die” play the tour. These guys are really great and we are looking forward to it.
AAM: Thanks for your time, any last words you want to share with your fans?
Spencer: June 20th pick it up.
