Rebel Meets Rebel :: Rebel Meets Rebel
Big Vin Records 2006
CD Review

By The Atomic Chaser

Rebel Meets RebelRebel Meets Rebel is just what it was supposed to be: a country/metal/rock/blues hybrid. A throwback to the ragged glory of second-string Southern rock acts such as Molly Hatchet and the Outlaws. For those wondering, the project is a collaboration between country legend David Allan Coe, plus Pantera's Dimebag Darrell, Vinnie Paul, and Rex Brown. Vinnie Paul describes it perfectly in the liner notes: "It's not metal and it's not country, it's just a get together of country metal minds! Pure Hell raisin', boozin', jamming' fun!" Virtually every track on the album stands out. First single "Nothin' to Lose" is a white-trash ride through the gambling world, while "Cowboys Do More Dope" packs more humor, catchiness and attitude into one song than anything in recent memory. Then you have "Panfilo" showcasing Abbott's little-known skill for acoustic guitar, leading into the heavy "Heart Worn Highway." Another track that stood out for me was, "Get Outta My Life", with Hank Williams III, showcasing his country punk angst to its fullest. All in all, Rebel Meets Rebel is a brilliant album, combining heavy metal and country with an unusual degree of success. It will prove an enduring testament to Dimebag's tremendous talent and versatility as a musician.
