'Soulfly' at The Whisky

By Scott M.

Many fans of Sepultura have been longing for a reunion with Max Cavalera for some time now. There has been some talk of this happening. But both parties have declined any such regrouping in the immediate future. But that's ok because Soulfly have released their greatest CD yet entitled "Dark Ages." While past Soulfly efforts had their shining moments, some complaints regarded the use of too many special guests and experimental vibes. People want more of the hard and heavy, and that's what they've got now. Soulfly have gotten back to their Thrash roots, and supply a great band to back it up. Opening up with "Babylon," the crowd immediately went berzerk. It took a couple of songs to get the groove going, but from there it was a nonstop onslaught. A few Sepultura faves were performed in the way of "Roots" "Refuse/Resist," and "Inner Self." Max is still the ever commanding front man, while guitarist Marc Rizzo adds a great musical and visual backdrop. Drummer Joe Nunez is a powerhouse as well. Some surprises included a cover of Black Sabbath's "Symptom Of The Universe," and teases of Slayer's "Reigning Blood," and Metallica's "Creeping Death." Perhaps the ultimate moment was "Arise Again" which really showed the talents of all musicians.

Will a Sepultura reunion ever happen? We'll have to wait and see. But until then, Soulfly is the next best thing.
