CD Review
By Susie Salva
Exceptional is the best word to describe Teddy Geiger’s debut CD, “Underage Thinking,” on Columbia records. Geiger’s music has breezy melodies and catchy choruses. Like his label mate John Mayer, Geiger’s lyrics are both profound and emotionally charged. His vocals are very sultry and sexy. An evolved soul, Geiger is more mature than his chronological age. At 17, he performs like a seasoned veteran. Teddy combines cutting edge new school pop with a love and understanding of the soul of rock’s glory days.
If you blinked you probably missed “Love Monkey,” on CBS featuring Tom Cavanagh ("Ed") who plays "Tom Farrell," a 30-something and single up-and-coming record executive. Geiger plays a struggling NY musician who gets signed by a major record company. Ironic, it appears as though art is imitating life. Geiger’s music is featured prominently showcasing four of his songs that are on his disc, “Underage Thinking.”
As a young upstart, Geiger began his musical career at the tender age of eight where he taught himself to play guitar and piano. An outcast from Rochester, NY he hit the local coffee houses as a freshman in high school. His fan base grew and they called themselves “Tedheads” His gigs were packing them in as his independent regional EP release, “Stepladder,” (on Cred Records) ranked #1 in Rochester and made the Top 10 in “Billboard’s regional “Heatseekers” Chart.
As a finalist on VH1’s “In Search of the New Partridge Family,” Geiger captured the ear of producer Billy Mann (Sting, Pink, Kelly Rowland, Jessica Simpson) who became a champion of Geiger’s work and went on to collaborate with him on several songs and acted as producer for “Underage Thinking.”
On “Underage Thinking,” Geiger’s lyrics run the gamut of faltering romances, the eccentricities of romances, broken hearts, as well as dealing with issues of self-esteem.
“For You I Will (Confidence),” talks about having the guts to face the problems of a failing relationship. Holding on to something that is just not right.
“Air Dry,” explores an ended relationship where he is over it and can move on with his life. “I’m not the jealous type. Who doesn’t sleep at night. You’ve got your karma I know I’ve got mine. And all my tears will air dry with just a little time.”
“Try Too Hard,” has a nice guitar run and catchy chorus and again deals with a broken heart.
“A Million Years” captures the idea of being caught up with what is in style and if the relationship is meant to be. There is a hint that there might be someone else involved too.
“Love Is A Marathon,” explores the idea of pacing yourself in a relationship.
“Cause when it’s good it’s a long open road.”
Geiger’s warm intimate vocals, candid conversational style creates a sound and sensibility that is uniquely his own. His lyrics are engaging and tell a story. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of them. Catch up with the roar of his buzz.
