'The Exploding Plastic Inevitable', the hard rockin' debut release from San Francisco based rockers , SUBSTITUTES, epitomizes what rock music is all about. It is POWER. It is ENERGY, HEAVY, LOUD, everything a rock record should be. With rock solid vocals, infectious rhythm and soaring guitar riffs, the Substitutes take you on a wild ride of steroid induced riff rockers. Here's how the boys from the bay dish it out, they combine the energizing guitars of Mike McShane and Joel Proto, whose playing is deeply rooted in the 70's stylings and tones. While Britt Pinella and Paul Roybal serve up the groove and feel of Funk Brothers rhythm section. Let us not forget the band's lead singer, Britt doesn't just sing, he delivers his lyrics and melodies with the soulful and conviction necessary to truly convey these stories! This lays the foundation for their album "THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE." The Substitutes remind me of a lot of bands who were in my Dad's record collection like MC5 and Steppenwolf. Many of the Substitutes songs seem like they could coexist somewhere on the Easy Rider soundtrack. The rocking kicks off big time once you hit play with "Taken A Lifetime" a full throttle rocker that will nail your ass to the floor! Then you have "In The City" that sounds like the MC5 meets Cactus. Songs like "First Thing I Want" and "Down On My Lady" are appealing because of the heavy and addicting riffs and the cool vocals. 'THE EXPLODING PLASTIC INEVITABLE' is a recording that makes you think you can take a trip back in time. A time when you got your rocks off with, big, loud, kick out the jam guitar rock riffs. Overall, I must say that Substitute's debut BLEW ME AWAY. If you want real rock music that doesn't suck, give Substitutes a listen. This album is a must-have for any self-respecting hard rock listener. www.thesubstitutes.com
