The Rustam Report
Denise Ames talks with AAM

By Debra Stocker

The Rustam ReportTHE RUSTAM REPORT is a local weekly half-hour series focusing on the latest in entertainment and local news in and around Los Angeles, but what seems to attract most viewers is the celebrity guests that News Anchor/Host Denise Ames manages to book and interview on the program (she also writes all news segments and pre-produces). It all started last summer when Publisher and Editor of Entertainment Today and The Tolucan Times, Mardi A. Rustam approached Ames with the idea of showcasing his newspapers within a television format. She then added in a cool celebrity guest interview into the middle of each episode and christened it The Rustam Report in honor of Rustam for giving her that one-in-a-million chance. The program began airing on one channel and has grown so quickly that it is currently seen on ten channels throughout L.A. County. All Access Magazine spoke with Denise to find out more...

AAM: Do you ever go on location to report on an outdoor concert or event?

Denise Ames: No; what is unique about the show is that we invite the celebrities to come to the studio and sit down one on one with me. It makes for a much more in depth interview because there are no outside distractions. People often ask me how I am able to get all the juice from my interviewees – it is due to that one-on-one atmosphere, plus being a reporter, I do my research.

AAM: Do you ever have live performances on your show?

Ames: Not yet, but I do have a musician ready to come on that wants to bring his guitar and perform acoustically during his interview, which I think will be great!

AAM: Who were some of the guest celebrities you have interviewed and who was the most interesting?

The Rustam ReportAmes: Besides the politicians (Sheriff Lee Baca, L.A. District Attorney Steve Cooley, Councilman Tom LaBonge), actors (Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Linda Blair) and radio personalities (Junkman from KNAC.COM, Stryker of KROQ FM) there are the rock stars. They are always great TV because many of them relish sitting down, during the day (!) and having a normal convo with someone that knows their stuff. Back in the metal scene days, I used to hang out at the Troubadour and the Rainbow - my God; I was just there last week! We’ve had Jaime St. James from Black ‘N Blue and now Warrant on, Jeff Penalty from Dead Kennedys, Tyler Nelson of Great White (who took Ty Longley’s place after his death in the Rhode Island fire a few years ago), etc. but my favorite guest is the former RATT front man, Stephen Pearcy. When that show began airing I received so many comments and requests for a copy of his episode – more than all the other shows combined! Because of that, and the fact that RATT’s Behind The Music will be debuting on VH1 in May, we decided to re-air his show in all of our weekly time slots (see Show Air Dates at www.TheRustamReport.com for his and all show times). Stephen and I are both from San Diego and I have loved RATT since he formed Mickey Ratt in S.D. We have a lot in common and know a lot of the same people from back in the day so he feels quite comfortable with me and we get along very well. He often refers to me as the ‘Mickey Ratt Madness Girl from San Diego’! (Hell, I knew Warren [DeMartini] before he did – when he played at Headquarters in S.D. with Enforcer – that kills Stephen every time I bring that fact up!!) (LOL) Other TV outlets have seen his episode and have since asked me (including folks at MTV) to interview him for their show because they say they have never seen him give up that much info to anyone on camera before. I just interviewed him again for The Metal Scene TV Show at his Keyclub gig last week. SEP and I have since worked together on some things for him and his company, Top Fuel Entertainment. He contacted me yesterday to start work on our next project together, which is going to be The Rustam Reportbig thou I can’t talk about it yet. But when I can, you’ll be the first to know!

My other favorite guest would be Linda Blair. Everyone knows her from The Exorcist, etc., but when she came on we mainly focused on all the wonderful work she does to save animals. The girl is absolutely amazing – an angel on earth to be honest. We have a mutual interest in helping those who can not speak for themselves and of course, we are both vegetarians, don’t wear fur, etc.

AAM: Who hasn’t been on your show that you would like to interview?

Ames: That would be Mayor Villaraigosa, and Josh Todd from Buckcherry. We are currently working on Todd to come on possibly in May. Have you heard their new release “15”? Everybody knows “Crazy Bitch”, but that whole album just ROCKS! We are also working on a tape date for L.A. Guns’ Phil Lewis to come on.

AAM: Do you focus only on national artists or interview up and coming indie artists too?

Ames: I absolutely interview up and comers! This is L.A. and the talent pool is endless here, which makes my job easier. I just had on local tribute band The Who Show as well as Dyna from ThundHerStruck, who, by the way, is a lovely woman. I am interested in having a member of the local metal band WOOD on in the near future.

AAM: Do you accept submissions from artist/groups wanting to be on your show?

Ames: Yep! Just go to the show’s website (www.TheRustamReport.com) and you will find all contact information there.

AAM: What channel, day and time can we see The Rustam Report?

Ames: We are on 10 channels at Charter, Adelphia, Comcast and TimeWarner. Each has its same weekly time slot making it easy to find the show. Just visit our website’s Show Air Dates page, which lists each celeb’s show times for the next two months! You will also see photos of the stars on our set, their bios, quotes and articles I have written on them for print along with news on other stuff I’m doing in the media world.

AAM: What else do you to do besides The Rustam Report?

Ames: I write for Entertainment Today and The Tolucan Times, including my own column in the latter. I also report from Red Carpet events, write and anchor news shows for both Charter Communications and Adelphia, provide many of the voice overs for local PSA spots, et al. Along with Mr. Rustam, I have my mentor Benny Dominguez, Director of the NBC-4 News to thank for shaping me into what I am today. My goal is to get on the national FOX News Channel...
