CD Review
By Bill Rowan aka "The Rocker"
For those of you that don’t know of the great singing, songwriting duo known as THE ZUBIA BROTHERS, here’s their story. (LET ME GIVE YOU A LITTLE BACKGROUND) They first started out as the CHIMERAS. One of the members was a very talented guitarist/songwriter named Doug Hopkins. Doug was the founding member of THE GIN BLOSSOMS and was responsible for a number of their hits. Somehow, he was kicked out of the band and ended up committing suicide in 1993. The Chimeras evolved into THE PISTOLEROS, who’s first hit was written by Doug Hopkins. After another CD, they recorded a live disc, which brings us up to date. They now go under the moniker & family name, The Zubia Brothers. Not only are Lawrence and Mark great singers and musicians, the songwriting ability of their late friend Doug Hopkins has surely rubbed off. As a matter of fact, the first song off their latest CD “Voices on the Street” is an homage to Mr. Hopkins. This full length CD is filled with their root rock songs about life in the Arizona desert and is produced by ex Gin blossom, Jesse Valenzuela and Michael Blum (Madonna, New Radicals). The CD showcases the harmonies and melodies over the landscape narrative that bring these songs to life. Once again, like ”My Guardian Angel” from their debut ‘Hang On To Nothing’, they add the mariachi sounds and a chorus in Spanish on “Hotel Defeated”. Once you hear the fantastic emotional vocals of Lawrence and the harmonies and guitar of brother Mark, then you’ll know why these guys are one of my favorites singer/songwriting talents. Whether you like pop or country or rock, you too, are going to love The Zubia Brothers.
