Girls Got RhythmGirls Got Rhythm is a fun and entertaining AC/DC tribute band that is an all-girl side project for members of Fireball Johnson, Elegantly Wasted, and Krell. Recently the rocking goddesses of these bands performed double even triple duty at The Gig by organizing their three respective bands to all play on the same bill as Girls Got Rhythm. The incredible connection of friendship and sisterhood meant that both fans and performers came early and stayed late making for a passionate night of rock laced with punk and industrial metal. Girls Got Rhythm includes three members of Fireball Johnson; Carla Betz, bass; Carla Bosnake, lead vocals; and Min Oh, lead guitar with Diana Widegren, rhythm guitar; (Elegantly Wasted) and Anna Yost, drums; (Krell). Diana Widegren from Elegantly Wasted plays rhythm guitar for GGR while Krell’s Anna Yost plays drums. These girls simply created a party atmosphere giving sound solid performances with both their original bands and Girls Got Rhythm.

The night started off with excitement as Fireball Johnson gave an excellent alternative rock performance that set a sensational tone for what was in store for the evening with special surprises along the way. Fireball Johnson formed when a trio of Girls Got Rhythm members decided that they had done enough “Dirty Deeds” and it was time to create original music starting off with a “Fine Line” that meant “So Long” to just doing covers. Carla Betz was already playing bass with a punk band called The Trainwrecks which is Garner Knutson’s (Piper Downs) side project that included sensational drummer Jason Rarick that was previously in Piper Downs where Betz has also done multiple guest performances. (Bobby Bognar (Piper Downs) was in the house to watch Fireball Johnson’s incredible show.) Betz was the link bringing this sensational new band together with Carla Bosnake, lead vocals; Carla Betz, bass; Min Oh, guitar; and Jason Rarick, drums that can boast incredible strength in both musicianship and material. Fireball Johnson is a band having a strong foundation and incredible potential to go from an Indie band to a major label as they further develop and continuously increase their fan-base. Girls Got RhythmWith a front-woman that could that could easily make the final cut in American Idol backed by rock solid musicianship, Fireball Johnson is a new band to keep your eye on with only the world being the limit.

Next up was Elegantly Wasted that put on an entertaining hard rock party with an edgy performance that pulled the audience in. The Elegantly Wasted name describes their attitude of being able to play and look good while partying hard with songs such as “Better Off Dead,” “Too Much Too Soon,” and “Circles.” Lenny J, lead vocals, rhythm guitar; joked around and said, “I’m not drunk, I’m elegantly wasted.” In addition to Lenny J, Elegantly Wasted featured Diana Widegren from Girls Got Rhythm, lead guitar, backup vocals; Olly, bass, backup vocals; and Pauly, drums, backup vocals who gave a rocking performance with a good time vibe with everyone grinning, enjoying themselves, and at times everyone singing in unison to the crowd’s delight. A highlight of the night was when Elegantly Wasted performed an incredible catchy song “Do What You Want” which is about finding yourself and being in control of your dynasty, and this is the song that can get them serious airplay. Fireball Johnson’s Carla Betz and Carla Bosnake performed with Elegantly Wasted as guest artists for “Stepping Stone” which is another great song.

The headliner of the night was Girls Got Rhythm that played to a full-house as they delightfully tantalized the audience with an incredible set. GGR played AC/DC cover songs that included their namesake song as they took the journey with fun and humor down the “Highway to Hell.” In addition to seeing repeat performances by Carla Bosnake, Carla Betz, Min Oh, Diana Widegren, the audience was introduced to Anna Yost who drummed while covering her red braided hair with horns confidently showing the audience what she could do. The girls dressed up with boots and sparkle belts and short skirt plaid costumes with the singer wearing jeans. GGR got the audience ready for Anna Yost’s band Krell which was the final band of the night showing off Yost’s ability to perform industrial metal which brought in a new crowd with some GGR fans remaining despite the late weeknight hour. Krell featured Gym Krell, lead vocals, guitar; Dirt, bass; Anna Yost, drums; and Adam, guitar giving a great performance that thrilled the heavy metal fans with both great instrumental and a lead singer that could enchant the crowd. Krell has a new CD out through Dinky music and like all the bands featured quite an impressive Myspace to learn more about them and their music. The night ended on a note of friendship with four bands bonding together and putting together a show they can all be proud of.
