Blacklist Union :: After The Morning
CD Review

By Susie Salva

Blacklist UnionBlacklist Union (BLU) has set out to produce the best music possible and also to thrill their fans. They have succeeded on both fronts as exemplified on their debut album, “After the Morning”. BLU are hard rockers playing memorable melodies, catchy choruses with a retro feel. Influenced by Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Jane’s Addiction, and Mother Love Bone all of these bands are in their mix on this exciting disc.

Blacklist Union is comprised of Tony West, on vocals, Mark Fain, lead guitar and backing vocals, Joey B., bass, and Moon Hills on drums. BLU exudes excitement from the beginning of the disc to the end.

“Life, Love, Pain, and loss…all kinds of stuff inspires us. All of our songs are mostly little stories of real life stuff that we have survived thru or whatever. We keep it real and mysterious but at the same time people can relate to it,” says Tony West.

BLU chose this type of music to express themselves because they believe that, “Rock N Roll is something we all were born with in our hearts and souls. We like the kind of music that makes you either want to fuck, drive fast and live wreckless and smash bottles! Rock N Roll has always been my saving grace and is the only thing that makes me feel that maybe I am on the right planet after all it is everything to us,” explains West.

After the Morning,” the title track opens with vocals similar to Ozzy. West vocals are clean, Fain guitar work is exceptional and the rhythm section is tight.

Please Kill Me,” talks about being barely able to breathe in a relationship that is drowning. West favors this song because, “It rocks hard and its a lot of fun to sing and is quite a challenge to sing as well.”

Beauty In Disguise,” is the idea of not being what you appear to be. Hills, their drummer is a monster, but does not distract from the rest of this track. This chorus is catchy. This song has a killer guitar solo showcasing Fains’ guitar finesse.

I Tried,” again is about a relationship gone sour. No matter how hard he tried it was never good enough. Joey B’s bass is thumping and in sync with Hills’ drumming.

Everything You Need,” West sings “You take everything from me and then you throw it all away.” No matter how hard he tried it was never good enough.

Dying To Live,” is the obligatory power ballad.

Blacklist Union delivers exciting, lustful, energetic music. They stick to their guns producing some fine modern rock with a dark edge. They are not afraid to flirt with danger. The production on this disc is fantastic. BLU’s ultimate goal with the band is to, “Have a career selling records and making people happy and traveling around the world doing what we love to do. You know, paving our own path and our own road calling our own shots ourselves,” says West. Check out Blacklist Union at www.blacklistunion.com or www.myspace.com/blacklistunion.
