3 FacedIn case you haven’t heard, 3 Faced won KLOS’s contest for an L.A.-area band to open for Bon Jovi’s Staples Center show after submitting 2 songs to the contest. 3 Faced also won Best Alternative Band award for all of Southern California at February’s first annual Southern California Music Awards.

Their web site’s bio goes this way: “Uprooting from Texas and replanting themselves on the West coast is by no means an uncommon story for a lot of new bands. But for 3 Faced it is a beginning that has collectively united us as a group. In the short time they have been together they have learned a lot about what it takes to give an audience a fresh perspective on an age-old formula built on songs and performance. After several shows in and around the Los Angeles area 3 Faced has begun to infiltrate what many think is one of the most prestigious music scenes in the country. It is only with their devotion to their musical lifestyles, as well as their curiosity and awareness, that the rest of the world can see the uprising of a new kind of band.”

But what’s the band really like? All*Access decided to find out.

AAM: How did the band form? Was your sound influenced by some of the members who were involved with other well-known musicians prior to this lineup?

JADE RUSSELL: Well, we are from Texas originally, but the band was formed here in Hollywood 2 years ago. It is very true that we all bring our own sounds, influences and faces to the band. Thus the name 3 Faced. Patrick, for instance, came from a heavy background with his band Union Underground, and I came from a more pop-rock oriented past. Our bassist Marty has played bass for such acts as Tommy Lee, Kelly Clarkson and Disturbed, so our styles worked great together. When it came time to find a drummer, Marty introduced us to his friend Duncan, and 3 Faced was complete. In the beginning, I believe that Marty and Duncan really helped us find the balance we needed in order to make the band work and have both of those elements mesh well together.

AAM: Why a female singer in this lineup? Jade, how were you chosen?

JR: Patrick was the one who decided on a female singer long before I was in the band. He sought me out while we were both living here in L.A., as he remembered meeting me through a mutual friend from Texas.

PATRICK KENNISON: When I ended my last band, I knew that I didn't want to relive or repeat what I had previously created. 3 FacedSo, like millions before me, I moved to L.A. and let fate lead the way. That is when I met Jade. I wanted Jade to be in this band because I wanted to challenge my own views of what a rock band should be and show the world that our approach would be different than how it had previously been done. Jade's influences range from Pat Benatar to Aerosmith and tend to offset my heavy and aggressive musical approach. I feel that the gap between Kelly Clarkson and Pantera has yet to be bridged, and to do so takes a very special approach.

AAM: Describe the band’s songwriting process.

JR: The songwriting process in this band is very interesting.... Patrick is the one who usually comes to me with a guitar riff or a rough idea for a song. He and I then sit and finish writing the guitar and vocal parts. Once that is done, we then take it to Marty and Duncan who put the "icing on the cake" with their magical rhythm and driving beats that make the song complete. That's also when we work out the arrangement of the song.

AAM: What does the name “3 Faced” represent?

JR: To me, as mentioned earlier, it represents all the multiple facets of the band. There are many elements that make up 3 Faced...3 to be exact: the heavy, the beautiful and everything in between.

AAM: What was it like winning the First Annual Southern California Music Awards?

JR: It was such an honor to just be nominated! Like I said the night we won, as musicians, it is just so nice when people stop and recognize all of a band’s hard work. It is truly inspiring and humbling. We couldn't be happier about it.

PK: Anytime art, no matter what the form, is recognized before it has been spoon fed to the rest of the world, it tends to hold more merit. So, when we actually won "Best Alternative Act," it reassured my faith that there are still people in the industry that can recognize good music before it becomes "cool" or "hip."

AAM: How did the band feel playing the Staples Center with Bon Jovi? Was it a huge adjustment from playing in smaller clubs?

MARTY O’BRIEN: Playing the Staples Center with Bon Jovi was an amazing experience. We usually play clubs in Hollywood, so to be up there in front of 25,000 people was just incredible. The crowd was awesome and there were cheers after all the songs, so that felt great.

AAM: How did the band get chosen for this gig?

3 FacedMO: The band was chosen by KLOS radio here in L.A. in a contest that picks one local band from each city to open for Bon Jovi. We are now up against 26 other bands to possibly open for Bon Jovi in the summer at Giants Stadium in NY.

AAM: Did you meet Bon Jovi? Did they offer the band any career advice or any advice in general?

MO: After our set, 3 Faced and Bon Jovi did a photoshoot together, and all the band members were very nice. We thanked them for the opportunity, then they were off to the stage to rock the Staples Center. Overall, it was an amazing night!

AAM: Have you had any endorsement offers made to you as a result, or any label interest?

MO: The band is still fairly new, so we have only just scratched the surface of getting the 3 Faced name out there. 2006 will be the year for 3 Faced!

AAM: What's next for 3 Faced?

PK: With all the attention we have been getting, it has inspired us to be more prolific as songwriters and performers. We already have over 30 songs in our repertoire and have no intentions of slowing down. The band is interested in securing a major label deal. However, with the current unstable state of the industry, we would like to see ourselves in a situation that could actually benefit the band and the label. Obviously, that situation would be to have great success and millions of records sold. We believe the best is yet to come!

AAM: For those readers who have never heard your music, how do you best describe it?

JR: Melodic so that the listener can sing along, but still edgy and heavy enough to where we think people can really feel the power of the music.

AAM: Is there a CD out yet or one in the making?

JR: No CD out quite yet; however, we are currently in the studio recording 4 new songs with former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody in the producer's seat. Ben has been very busy lately producing a lot of amazing rock bands and other artists, including Kelly Clarkson's latest Grammy-winning CD, so we are very anxious to see what he can add to 3 Faced's music. As soon as we have those tracks down, we are looking to put some sort of CD/DVD release together for sure. It will be available on our web site: http://www.3Faced.net

AAM: What do you think of today’s music scene?

JR: For the most part, I love today's music scene. I think that there are a lot of extremely talented and interesting artists and bands out there today. You always have your occasional letdown of course, but overall I love the variety!

PK: I think that the hit single has replaced the hit record. While we are not seeing any career artists, we are seeing a lot of songs that may or may not stand the test of time. However, some bands such as Avenged Sevenfold and My Chemical Romance are giving us a fresh spin on great styles of music that we've heard before.

AAM: What’s the best way your fans can keep up with you?

JR: The latest news and show dates are on 3-Faced.com as well as our MySpace page, http://www.MySpace.com/3Faced. Be sure to keep checking in with our band online! Feel free to send us messages and email us through our site! We always love to hear from the people who enjoy the music! 3 Faced has big plans for 2006 so keep your eye out for us. We love you guys!

AAM congratulates the 3 Faced for their killer performance at the Staples Center opening for Bon Jovi! If you missed it, log on to their web site and see the live video. Check out the band’s tour dates while you're there and be sure to catch their next performance. This group is hot and won't be local for long! Again, a BIG congrats to 3 Faced from AAM.
