Two great bands laid waste to a sold out Troubadour this evening. Local boys, The Bronx really packed them in. Now if you're into true Punk, I mean “TRUE” Punk Rock, then The Bronx are for you. But if you're idea of Punk is Green Day, Good Charlotte, or Blink 182, then you'd better either run for your mommy, or open your mind and ears and realize the error of your ways. The Bronx released their debut album a couple of years back to critical acclaim in the underground. Produced by ex Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke strangely enough, it was a ball of raw unbridled energy that spat out lyrics about the unglamorous, decaying side of this city. Songs such as "Heart Attack American," and "False Alarm" had the loyal fans slamming and singing along to every word. I can only hope great things for this band as it comes from their hearts, and not their pocketbooks or fashion attire.
Next up were semi Stoner greats High On Fire. Imagine Motorhead jamming with Venom, and that's what High On Fire delivers. Guitarist/Vocalist Matt Pike is definitely a unique front man who has incorporated all his influences and turned them into his own. New album "Blessed Black Wings" was on many critics’ top ten lists last year, and a stint on the Sounds Of The Underground has definitely helped them along the way. Songs such as "Devilution" and "Cometh Down Hessian" showcase the range and depth of the HOF sound. Drummer Des Kensel keeps it all flowing along very nicely, and former Melvins bassist Joe Preston stands and delivers with his big fat sound. All in all a great show for these guys and hopefully they will only get bigger from here.
