CD review
By The Atomic Chaser and The Rocker
What happens when you take a power pop band that recorded a stellar CD for Disney's Hollywood Record, give them the balls of The Stooges and a trashy glam make over from the Sunset Strip? You get the band TSAR. Yes, the power pop hooks are still there, but this time, the gritty chords are exploding and the melodic choruses are flying.
Now making their home on TVT Records, TSAR prepare for the release of "Band-Girls-Money" which was produced by David Katznelson (Flamming Lips, The Warwicks), recorded by Mathis Schnerberger (Mondo Generator, The Lemonheads) and mixed by Tony Hoffer (Black, The Vacation).
The opening title track kicks things off with a, scream from front-man Jeff Whalen. The band can be seen (OR HEARD???) performing this song on national TV in two different commercials. One for Napster, the other for Nestle's Crunch, telling people about a promotion of millions of free downloads for music fans. But you've got to check out the whole CD.
You'll soon be singing along to "Love Explosion" or rocking out to the heavy riffs of "Superdeformed". There's the roller coaster ups-and-downs of "Wrong" and the smashing closer "You cant always want what you got", that starts off like a mellow ending to the disc, but builds up and crashes all around in a haze of piercing guitar. So gather your friends 'cuz TSAR is throwing one hell of a listening party.
