Lucienne ThomasLucienne Thomas is the lead singer of DREAMBOAT ANNIE, (California's Premiere HEART tribute band). An extremely talented artist, and inspiration to the music scene. Lucienne's recent performance at 14 Below brought down the house, simply astounding. It's no wonder she took home the award for "Best Female vocalist" at the 2005 AAM Awards.

But how did Lucienne get started singing? Why a Heart tribute band? And what's in her future? I present to you Lucienne Thomas...

AAM: Lucienne tell us, Where are you from?

Lucienne: I am from the Netherlands.

AAM: How did you start your vocal career ie: training, bands, performance?

L: I started singing at the age of 7. Abba was my main influence and I bought all of their albums, to which I sang at home. I did that every day! At the age of 8, I started playing classical piano and finished the classical Music School of Maastricht at the age of 12. I fell in love with rock and roll when I was about 16 years old and my favorite bands were Whitesnake and Heart! I never had any formal vocal training but took some lessons from a vocal coach. When I was 18, I started singing in a local rock band and I haven't stop performing since. The last band I was in was located in the Netherlands, before moving to the United States in 1993. It was a thrash metal band called, Lost In Misery.

AAM: What brought you to Hollywood?

L: I was on vacation in Hollywood in 1989, and on the last day of my trip, I met my husband! I went back home, finished college (I am a translator) and moved to the U.S. in 1993, to be with my then boyfriend and now husband for 12 years, Dan Thomas.

AAM: Have you always been into Heart or every expect to be in a Heart tribute band?

L: I got hired to sing for Barracuda, a Heart tribute band, about a year ago. Before that, I was the lead singer in Phantom Blue and Cutthroat, but people always mentioned that I sounded so much like Ann Wilson and that I should sing in a Heart tribute band. So, about two years ago, I noticed an ad by Barracuda, looking for a vocalist. I replied, auditioned and got the job. Unfortunately, the band fell apart within a year, so I started looking for other Heart tribute bands and found Dreamboat Annie. I never expected to be in a Heart tribute band but I have always loved Heart.

AAM: What are your favorite Artist and Albums other than heart?

L: My favorite artists other than Heart are, Dream Theater, Nickelback, No Doubt and I really like Shania Twain. Abba was, is and will always be my most favorite band of all times!

AAM: Congratulations on winning "Best Female Vocalist" at the AAM awards show last November. Did you ever expect to win?

L: No, I didn't expect it. I didn't even know I was nominated in the first place, because we only just started gigging. In 1999, I won Best Female Vocalist at the RCN Award show too, I was the lead singer of Phantom Blue then.

AAM: How does it feel to be the best?

L: I don't consider it proof that I'm the best. There are people that are just as good or way better out there. It's nice to have these awards at home though.

AAM: Where do you see the Tribute scene going?

L: I'm afraid the tribute thing might be a temporary fad. Just like the hair bands in the eighties. I don't know what will happen here, people might get bored with tribute bands, who knows? It's very sad though that many talented musicians have had to resort to tribute bands. It's insanely hard to even get a decent gig when you have an original band here in LA. It's like people don't care about original talent. They just care about how many people you can bring and how many drinks they can sell. So, in order to play any good and sometimes even paid gigs, you basically have to be in a tribute band nowadays in LA! It's very sad indeed, but I love doing what I do, especially when you see the public go wild and sing along to all these Heart oldies!

AAM: What advice could you give aspiring young singers trying to make singing a Career?

L: Practice hard and never give up. Just look at those talent less signed artists nowadays! If they can do it, so can you! And I think you have to be very original as well.

AAM: Have you or would you ever consider doing a solo or original album?

L: No, I am not interested in recording a solo album. I never even thought of it, honestly. I used to record a lot when I was in original bands, but never really liked it. I also recorded a Gospel song for some friends of mine, so if anyone comes up with a great song, I'm perfectly willing to collaborate on that.
But a solo album? I'm afraid not. I don't really like recording, as I said before and I would much rather prefer to be on stage! That's what I REALLY love about being a singer!

Well Strangers, this concludes my Interview with Lucienne Thomas. We are lucky to have her on the scene, Lucienne is as lovely as she is talented, You MUST see her live so you will understand why everyone loves her. Cheers Lucy!!
